The Issue

United we can help those in need build a firm financial foothold.

Nearly 18% of people in Los Angeles County live in poverty. 28% of post-9/11 veterans in L.A. County are unemployedi. Many lack the tools they need to stabilize their finances and the access they need to find good jobs.

United Way is committed to providing financial coaching for hard-working families, and job readiness and placement assistance for returning servicemen and women.

The best anti-poverty programs build on each other. Results in one area support progress in another. Our financial stability work supplements outcomes in education by helping parents pay the bills—which has a direct, positive effect on their children’s ability to graduate high school.

We provide:

  • Job readiness and placement assistance
  • Tools to facilitate reduced debt, improved credit score, lowered rate of delinquent bills, and other asset building strategies
  • Information about community resources and public benefits
  • Free tax assistance to parents
  • Information about college accessibility, college financing assistance, savings programs and how college can raise future earnings
